Recycling Now Available for Willow Mist Residents!

If you’ve seen the big green container sitting next to the regular trash dumpster here at Willow Mist, then you probably already know that we now offer easy recycling! Recycling is one of the easiest ways to significantly reduce our harmful impact on Mother Earth. In fact, did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours?!

We are always looking to add the best amenities at Willow Mist to make our residents’s lives easier. Previously, if you recycled, you would have to load up your cars with all your recyclables and drive to one of the many drop-off points across the county. This was very inconvenient, so in an effort to make it much easier for everyone, we are now providing our residents with a drop-off point right here in the community! We are proud to be a part of making the world a better, cleaner place and want to make you aware of some important things to know before you start recycling, and give some tips to make it easier.

Willow Mist’s August Pet of the Month

Since the return of Willow Mist’s Pet of the Month in July, we’ve gotten a plethora of adorably furry (and some scaly) family members. Willow Mist is proud to call itself one of the most pet friendly communities in Athens, GA and we were overjoyed to see so many families submit their pets. It was difficult to pick, but if you don’t see your forever friend as this month’s pet of the month, fret not! We will be announcing a new winner every month and your pet could be the lucky dog (or cat… or snake… you get the point).

So, without further hesitation, September’s Pet of the Month title goes to…

ZEUS!

Zeus, a three-year-old rescue is a loving, vivacious cat with a lot of spunk. It’s hard to tell exactly what breed Zeus is, but according to his veterinarian, he closely resembles a Turkish Angora.

Since Zeus was adopted by his mom, Carrie, back in 2010, he has brought numerous laughs and immeasurable amounts of joy to her life. When Zeus joined her family, Carrie was not looking to adopt a pet. She heard from a friend that a lady’s cat had recently had a litter of kittens, but the lady was financially unable to care for them all. Being the animal lover she is, Carrie decided she would just go “check it out”. Still, having no plans to adopt, she assumed she could at least help spread the word and find the precious cats a place to call home.

Upon her arrival, Carrie’s plans immediately went out the window. She saw the group of kittens playing in the middle of the floor, but it was when she saw the smallest kitten of all walking toward her that her heart melted.

“I instantly knew I wasn’t walking out there without taking him home with me,” Carrie recalls. “It was like he picked me out. He came over and sat next to me while his brothers and sisters played.”

For the first two years of his life, Zeus and Carrie shared an apartment, but everything changed about a year ago. When Carrie’s then boyfriend proposed to her, the happy couple moved in together. Carrie’s fiancé also had a male cat and the two were not sure how this would work out. At first, it was tough on Zeus, but luckily over time, Zeus made friends with his new brother and the four have lived happily together for the last year.

We’re thrilled to have Zeus and his family here at Willow Mist and we hope he enjoys being crowned as August’s Pet of the Month. If you happen to see Zeus and his parents around the community, be sure to stop and say congrats!

If you would like to see your family pet’s loving face on our community blog, simply email us at hello@willowmistathens.com with your favorite photos of your pet! Please also include your pet’s age, breed, favorite activities and a few reasons why your pet has been an extraordinary addition to your family. The pet (and owner) will receive a special mention on our Facebook and Twitter, a blog post and a special treat!

Willow Mist’s March Pet of the Month

As we’ve mentioned before, pets come in all shapes and sizes. Some are furry while others are winged. Some slither on their bellies while others trot happily alongside their humans. Up until recently, all of the pets you’ve submitted to the Willow Mist Pet of the Month Contest have been cats and dogs – and we’ve truly enjoyed helping you share the love you have for your four-legged friends. As any fellow animal lover can attest, sorting through silly photos of our small companions is enough to make a bad day much brighter.

This month, though, our selected pet is just a little different. He can’t be cuddled and kissed, but he still gets plenty of love and attention! So, without further ado, Willow Mist is proud to introduce its first aquatic Pet of the Month: Willy the goldfish!

Choosing an Apartment in Athens, GA

It may be hard to see it now, especially given the recent freezing temperatures, but Spring is right around the corner. As you may already know, the season of rebirth in Athens means more than just blooming flowers, pollen and milder temperatures. In this vibrant North Georgia city, Spring is also known as apartment-hunting season. Soon you’ll begin to see ads promising the town’s lowest rates, various move-in specials and other common incentives. For many, the early months of the year begin a mad dash to secure a spot for the upcoming summer and fall turn. Whether you’re new to town and looking for just the right home, or you’re helping a friend find their own local digs, the Willow Mist family is here to offer some inside wisdom on choosing an apartment in Athens, GA.

First and foremost, you need to determine your needs. What is most important to you? For some Athenians, it’s about being close to the town’s best restaurants, bars and shops. For others, it’s all about peace and solitude.

Next, when looking for an apartment in Athens, GA, consider your lifestyle. Obviously the average lifestyle of a 21 year old college student will differ greatly from a 30 year old couple with children or a single grad student. While younger apartment seekers may be on the hunt for accommodations with easy access to nightlife, others prefer a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle of college partying.

Need a Ride Home This New Year’s Eve?

New Year’s Eve is one of the most popular holidays in America and also one of the most dangerous. Since many people ring in the new year with a drink (or several), it’s important to make sure everyone is getting where they’re going safely. In order to ensure that anyone who has had too much to drink doesn’t hit the roads on New Year’s Eve, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has made it easier than ever.

7 Holiday Travel Preparation Tips

The holidays are finally here! While most of you feel as though you just finished packing up last year’s Christmas decor, our younger residents have been eagerly counting the days until Santa pays his annual visit. One thing is for certain, regardless of age – this time of year it’s all about spending time with those you love. If you’re planning on packing up and hitting the road alongside the several million other holiday travelers, then we wish you a safe and convenient experience! Before you head out, consider these 7 helpful tips to prepare for your Willow Mist home prior to departure:

1. Make a list, and check it twice! All too often, we leave the house in such a frazzled hurry that we forget something important. Make a list of all of all those commonly forgotten items (i.e. phone chargers, toothbrushes and medication.)

2. Take out the trash. It seems simple enough, but you wouldn’t believe the number of people who forget – and come home to a smelly home.

3. Wash your dishes. Depending on how long you’re done, dirty dishes can grow mold – even if they’re in the dishwasher.

Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October means changing leaves, trick-or-treating and cooler temperatures (if you’re lucky) – but it also has one other important meaning. For the past 27 years, October has also been known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For many, this is a time for remembering loved ones who lost their battle, or for celebrating the health of survivors who beat the disease. Most of all, though, this is a month designated to remind people that breast cancer can happen to anyone.

Athens, GA supports the fight against breast cancer and, here at Willow Mist, we’d like to remind everyone of the importance of sharing your awareness with others. As you may already know, awareness, education and early detection can save lives.

Changes Coming to Willow Mist this Fall

Saturday marks the first official day of fall and, like us, I’m sure you’re more than ready for those cooler temperatures. If you’ve been living in the South for any length of time, then you know it’s hard to tell just when those colder conditions will be here to stay. Mornings in Athens have been markedly cooler, but some afternoons are still just as hot and humid as July. In recent years we’ve experienced summer-like temperatures well into November, and in other years, autumn has come blowing in before the end of September. While we can’t predict the weather patterns, we do want to remind all residents to be prepared for other changes around Willow Mist this fall:

The Most Important Meal(s) of the Day Done Right

Breakfast and brunch: Two incredibly important meals to get any day started right. Lucky for us (and all Athens, GA residents), there is no shortage of great restaurants serving delicious breakfasts daily. While breakfast isn’t necessarily hard to come by, one restaurant definitely sticks out from the rest with their unique “Southern Fun Dining” atmosphere and undeniably appetizing menu. Voted the best breakfast in Athens by the Athens Banner-Herald and Flagpole Magazine, Mama’s Boy is an Athens, Georgia classic.

A favorite of both locals and weekend visitors, Mama’s Boy is almost always sure to have a line out the door. To beat the rush, plan to get there first thing in the morning (they open at 7 am). For those of you wanting to sleep in and have a little less patience than others, I assure you the food is well worth the wait. Continue reading →

Tips for Reducing Your Summer Power Bill

According to the calendar, autumn officially begins in less than a month – but the southern weather didn’t get that memo. Around here, you’re lucky if you can turn off your A/C before November. For those Willow Mist residents hoping the steamy hot dog days will soon end, you’d better prepare yourself for a few more weeks of high humidity and soaring temperatures. The upside is that you have several more weeks to enjoy sunny day activities such as swimming, barbecuing and cold drinks on the porch. The downside is that the high temperatures are often reflected in your monthly utility bills.

Like most local residents, you may be a little concerned that your utility bills are especially outrageous. What you may not know is that Georgia Power increases their rates during the hottest and coldest months of the year in order to cover all of the additional service they must provide to local homes. While the increase may feel significant, there are many other factors that could be contributing to high power bills. Here are some helpful hints for reducing your power bills:

Cruelty-Free Cuisine with Real Flavor

Imagine savory Reuben sandwiches piled high on marbled rye with sauerkraut and Russian dressing dripping off the crust, juicy burgers topped with ripe tomato slices nestled within a basket of hot French fries and delicious gyros filled with roasted veggies and Tzitziki so creamy and delicious you’ll assume it was teleported straight from the streets of Greece. Is your mouth watering yet? What if I told you all of this delectable goodness, which makes up only a small fraction of The Grit’s extensive menu, was 100% meat free?

Before you start running for the closest steakhouse to drown your horror in an extra rare T-bone, consider the fact that thousands of full-time meat eaters and full-fledged vegans are able to dine here on a weekly basis in total harmony. For those of you who think a vegetarian meal consists of head of lettuce topped with sprouts and a handful of soy beans, think again. The tofu, seitan and other meat substitutes are so expertly seasoned, marinated, fried and chopped, even vegetarian patrons often question whether or not their food is truly animal-free.
